Description:

Infant Bereavement Boxes for Local Hospitals

Donations can be dropped off at McKenna for this and other projects anytime Saturday 10/8 9am-2pm and Sunday 10/9 9am-1pm. Projects at McKenna will also have other activities, such as encouragement cards for some of our local heroes.

The birth of a child is usually a happy experience. Unfortunately, parents sometimes go home from delivering a baby with empty arms. In the New Braunfels and San Antonio area, there are hundreds of losses every year. These families go home with nobody in the car seat they installed, devoid of hope and in desperate need of healing.

For years, a local non-profit provided hospitals with boxes of items to help these parents create memories during their time with their baby in the hospital, but that non-profit has shut down and hospitals haven’t been able to replace the program themselves. Often, these boxes have pretty blankets to wrap baby/ies in, a stuffed animal to hug, a journal to write in, a piece of jewelry, a picture frame, etc.

Personally, I am a photographer who volunteers with Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep to take professional photos of these little ones. Often our photographers use the blankets, stuffed animals, and hats from the boxes during their portrait session. I can attest that these boxes provide so much more than just the items inside for these parents. They provide hope that their babies won’t be forgotten; hope that, eventually, healing can happen. They are a reminder that their community cares. Nobody wants to worry they may forget their child or be afraid to talk about their child just because they died. These boxes are healing, not to mention something of their baby’s to carry away from the hospital.

Donations of: blankets, bows, stuff animal, grief books, journals, etc. are needed.
